The SC Collegiums took the decision to ask Mr. Dinakaran to go on leave on Thursday and appoint Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Justice Madan B Lokur in his place.

Justice P D Dinakaran has been under the spotlight since July 2009 when allegations of encroachment were leveled by first by a group of advocates from Chenna.

After some eminent advocates of the Supreme Court took up the matter, the issue came to be taken up by the Bangalore bar. In its first resolution in July, the Advocates Association of Bangalore wanted the Chief Justice to stay away from court. Subsequently another resolution was passed, saying that advocates should wait for a report before passing any resolution.

pakistani lawyers have held a rally in a show of support for the judiciary in its row with the government over the appointment of judges.

The lawyers gathered outside the Supreme Court building in Islamabad on Monday, chanting anti-government slogans.

The demonstrators objected to President Asif Ali Zardari's appointments to the judiciary, saying the actions were against the advice of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Following the president's move, the Supreme Court suspended Zardari's appointments on the grounds that they were unconstitutional.

A notorious history-sheeter, along with his lawyer, was hacked to death near Poonamallee on Friday, hours before the judgment on a bomb blast case, in which he was an accused, was to be pronounced by a TADA court.

An eight-member gang took the rowdy, Chinna alias Chinna Kesavalu, and lawyer Bhagat Singh, by surprise when they had driven a little distance away from the court premises in Poonamallee and stopped the car at Kumananchavadi for lunch. Earlier, Bhagat Singh’s senior Shyamala and the two deceased had arrived at the court at around 10.30 am as the verdict on the case relating to a incident in 2002 - when bombs were hurled at Panagal Park in T Nagar - was scheduled for the day.

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed a Madras High Court order approving the new by-law of the Madras High Court Advocates Association for holding elections to the office bearers and issuing certain directions.

A vacation Bench of Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice C.K. Prasad stayed the order on a special leave petition filed by advocate R. Sudha challenging the High Court order dated April 16.

When senior counsel Ratnakar Dash appearing for the petitioner submitted that unreasonable rules had been framed for the elections and members were discriminated, Justice Singhvi observed “the High Court Division Bench has virtually taken over the functioning of the advocates association for the last four years. How can you discriminate among the members {in contesting elections}. We will have to examine whether the High Court is justified in passing such orders.”
